STANDOUT HOLE 9
-Thai, International, Japanese, European
Monday and Tuesday, April through October, green fee is 1,250 baht
Located at km 10 on Bangna-Trat Highway, with easy access from Bangkok via several expressways. Designed originally by Nick Faldo, it has gone through several revamps. There are many opulent houses located around the course. Plenty of wildlife including colourful birds and small reptiles share the habitat with golfers.
On a typical weekday one can finish 18 holes in reasonable time. There are lots of challenging holes. Inadequate drainage and circulation results in flooding in some areas, so avoid playing in rainy season or after a heavy downpour, and some ponds and lakes are filled with dead fish. The course needs improvement, but that seems unlikely as it never closes with night golf every evening except Monday.
The clubhouse seems to be constantly under renovation. The pro shop has limited accessories on offer at reasonable prices. The restaurant is normally very busy taking care of diners throughout the day and evening but the food is nothing special.
Kiosks located after every third hole are well stocked along with used golf balls, all at reasonable prices. Caddies, well dressed and polite, are efficient and are good at reading greens.
Overall golfing experience 6.0
Better to play on weekdays, as the course is over-booked on weekends. Marshals are also reluctant to push the groups of gambling big shots who use the course, which can lead to some frustratingly long rounds. Its proximity to the city makes this worth a play.
