STANDOUT HOLE 16
Designed by Artanan Yomchinda the course is set against the backdrop of forested hills about 20 km west of Ratchaburi. Not well sign posted, the venue is worth the effort to find. A large hotel caters mostly to the many Korean groups that play here during their winter months.
The short par 5 first sets the scene with imposing rocks to the right and a dogleg left to a downhill green. The woods, shrubs and flowers are home to plenty of wildlife and the course is a sheer joy to walk around. Conditions are generally good except some bunkers and annoying out-of-bounds areas. Red, yellow and white tee boxes are too short, thus male and female 18 handicappers and under should play blues and yellows respectively.
Clubhouse is in need of an extensive upgrade. Changing and locker facilities are rudimentary. The small pro shop has most of what you might need and drinks stops are functional. A small driving range behind clubhouse plays into the hillside and there’s a good practice green and chipping area.
A take it-or-leave-it style, but friendly. Use one of the many experienced caddies as they seem to know every inch of the course.
Overall golfing experience 9.0
The front nine with wide and flat fairways lulls the golfer into false sense of security while back nine has many demanding holes. With twists and turns on the sometimes-narrow fairways and trees appearing in places one would prefer otherwise, accuracy and length are required.
